New Math Center Builds Fact Fluency

The first-grade students in Mrs. Doyle’s classroom at Trafford Elementary School are enjoying a new classroom Math Center which was funded through the DonorsChoose crowdfunding platform.

Students visit the math center weekly and choose from a variety of math games and manipulatives to build on math fact fluency and gain more understanding of first-grade math concepts.  The students have plenty to choose from including addition and subtraction games (which will be supplemented with time, fraction, and money games as each concept is taught), math equivalency puzzles,  jumbo playing cards, floor mat activity sets, pattern blocks with activity cards, and much more.

“First-grade students need more than books and worksheets to be fluent mathematicians,” says Mrs. Doyle.  “To help them memorize math facts as well as learn and recall other important everyday math skills, learning should be hands-on and interactive.”
